Should You Be Giving More?
As I've gotten older, and hopefully wiser, I've learned something incredibly important. Giving is Living. I've learned that the best way to ensure you never go broke, is to give, give, and give some more. There is cliché after cliché that I could cite here, but the fact of the matter is this: Giving will get you more in this life, then taking and receiving. It doesn't matter what you give, the principle remains the same. A giver is always going to be on the receiving end more frequently than a person that is stingy and hoards for themselves.
Giving is not just about your money. it's about giving of your time and energy, and giving your gifts or talents. What you give should stretch you and cause you to go out of your way and expand yourself. If you give and it doesn't affect you or cost you anything, then it's possible you should be giving more. Giving doesn't have to hurt, but it should take you out of your comfort zone, and be a sacrifice and not just a mundane inconvenience.
It's also important that you give with a good heart and good intentions. The Bible tells us to be a hilarious (cheerful) giver. When you give with the right heart and helpful motives, it will come back to you in the same way. Do you give because you have to? Or do you give because you want to? If you want to get over a feeling of depression or a melancholy mood, reach out to someone and give something to them. Giving is some incredibly powerful medication that, when done with the right heart, will cause you to think about someone other than yourself and relieve stress.
I learned, through my life as a Christian, that giving with the right heart, is the gateway to being prosperous. Not only will giving come back to you in the form of money and resources, but giving is therapy to your spirit and feeds your soul. Nowadays, I freely give to my local church, a tithe, I give from the money I earn through my rental houses, and I give shoes to a local domestic violence shelter, at least 3 to 4 times a year in bulk. Yet, with all of that giving, I still wonder is there more I can give? Can I do more with all of the blessings I have? I challenge you to think long and hard about what you are giving. What are you doing to help people that are less fortunate than you? What are you doing to ensure your talents and gifts are being used to benefit others? Whether you have a business, or simply a job, are you helping others to the full measure of your capabilities? Are you teaching this fundamental principle of giving to your children? Are you talking to your kids and others about the importance of being a giver. Since I have focused on purposeful giving, I've never needed or been without anything!
When you live your life as a taker, and as an extractor that takes from the world without putting anything back into it, then you are missing the mark. Our job, as humans, is to give back to others, give back to the earth, and to feed, not suck up the resources for the benefit of our self. You have something to offer the world, but if you are stingy, you will take that gift to your grave. Find that extra cash, extra time, or extra gift, that you can give to the world and help others, and watch your life be blessed and your cup run over.
