The Top 4 Biggest Distractions

The things that keep us distracted are numerous and oh so plentiful! America seems to be working overtime nowadays at getting people off task, off focus, and stuck on foolishness and clownish things. Here are my top 4 things that are vigorously and intentionally used to keep us distracted and not focused on wealth building, learning useful new schemata, void of relationship development, and spiritually underdeveloped:

1. Music and Entertainment -- Disclaimer: I'm not against music or entertainment. However, I am vehemently against music and entertainment, in lieu of, learning. Sadly, we'd rather learn line dancing, cha cha slides, and hip hop moves, then how to invest our money. We'd rather spend time listening to slow jams than reading a book. Music and entertainment has it's place, but when lives are at stake, futures are hanging in the balance, and generational survival is on the line, music, movies, and other forms of entertainment, are the last thing we need to be focused on. Music has been used to dull us and de-sensitize us. We don't need this distraction. Music is fun, music is good for the soul, and music can be nourishing, but for 99.9% of us, music has not put food on the table, paid a bill in the house, or fed to anything of substance for our children. For a musical people, it's an incredibly effective distraction that is used as a tool to muddy our waters.

2. Politics - While politics is important and has it's place, especially local politics, I could care less about getting up in arms, distraught, or worried about the national political scene that seems more like a circus and a Reality TV show, then real substantial politics. The amount of times we want to spend mimicking what we are told to discuss by CNN and FOX News, is amazing. We spend an incredibly inordinate amount of energy playing this political fiddle that makes Democrats hate all things Republicans, and Republicans hate all things Democrat. If you agree with all things on one side of the political fence, and dislike all things on the other side, then you aren't thinking for yourself and are a bigger pawn in the political game then you know. CNN and FOX News creates political news, which provides them with programming that is designed to draw viewership, which, in turn, draws sponsors that pay for spots. It's a well designed game, and we fall for it by engaging in it. If you want to vote and participate, by all means do so, so will I, but I'm not going to spend precious time debating and talking about things I can't control and things I don't have all of the real information about. I can't base a lot of opinions on the political farce and sideshows I see on tv and then have any well thought out comment over poorly presented, politically biased news reporting. Its a joke! Politics is fine and I understand it's importance, but behind closed doors, the Democrats and the Republicans are more alike then they are different, and National politics rarely affects your day to day life immediately, or substantially. Instead of focusing on President Trump and all of the surrounding shenanigans, spend that energy building something. If you are busy building, you will have less opportunities to focus on Reality TV, better known as national politics.

3. Sports - Athletics has become one of the absolute biggest distractions. We spend more time debating sports, attending sporting events, thrusting children into club sports, and watching sports, then most of us do with anything else in our lives. Sports has become an overconsumed mecca for many people in America. We decorate our faces and yell and cheer like lunatics, paint our man caves, hold on to the hope of glory for our marginally athletic children, argue about frivolous statistics like we really have stake in a professional or college team, and work overtime to afford tickets, parking, and a beer, at any given local sporting event. At some point, enough is absolutely enough! Sports is purposely used as a distraction. At one time, sports was seen as child friendly, and not something that serious adults would partake in. But in the last 100 years, sports has been intentionally produced and promoted and encouraged to the point that it is such an enormous part of our culture, that it's literally over bearing. And this is coming from a guy that enjoys sports! We pack arenas, pay ridiculous costs, and overconsume sports like its life-giving water. It's overload and it's fed to us 24 hours a day. Enough is enough already with the sports!! Seriously. Time to re-focus on things that matter.

4. Racism and other ism's - Racism is important. Racism is damaging to a psyche. Racism, and other "isms' are hurtful, crushing, controlling, and consuming. Any of these "isms" can be a major distraction and major impediment to one's life. The challenge is to not let it be. The one commonality a group tends to have is to rally around how they are treated, or the obstacles they face. The only problem is how daunting and time consuming this rallying can become. It can block progress and destroy motivation. It's an everyday battle to not let racism consume you. It's a major distraction for Black people when we constantly face racism, and, in turn, are constantly forced to think about and absorb the enormity of the effects of it on our lives. Don't let it be that distraction. It's ok to think about it, and learn about the history and current impacts of racism, but make a vow to never have long drawn out conversations about race, UNLESS, you are offering solutions or ways to overcome it! You can complain all day and night until you are blue in the face about racism, or any other ism, but until you do something, change something, or build something, the problems regarding these isms aren't going anywhere. White people aren't changing anytime soon, so the quicker you find ways to compete, and not complain, the better off you will be. Vow to add solutions to every conversations you have about racism, or any other ism, and then it turns from being a gripe session that is a daunting distraction, to being a source of empowerment and action!

If you can sort of curb your enthusiasm over these 4 things, you will be set to focus on the things in life that matter most, such as God, family, giving to others, building wealth for your community and your family, and learning and educating yourself. As long as you are stuck on the shenanigans surrounding these intentional distractions, you will stay stuck, along with the rest of the sheep, in ignorance, which is exactly where they want you. Temper your habits and force yourself to refrain from the normal overload of consumption from the rhetoric surrounding these things, and you will soon become a more focused productive builder, and in control of your own destiny! Read more, focus on your spiritual walk with God, build wealth and capital, develop your family, and do things that matter, not things that force you to spend time and energy on what they force feed you!
