Building an EBay Business Part-Time
In 6 years, I took an $80 camera, a laptop, an idea, and some desire, and created a debt-free online business that to this date, has sales of nearly $100K. All of this on a part-time basis of no more than 15 hours a week, while working a full time job, raising a family, owning and managing rental property, and volunteering my time to help those in need.
Business building is not rocket science, it's not something that’s insurmountable, and it’s not brain surgery. My journey has primarily been a one man show with some help here and there, from my wife and daughters, who would try on shoes for me from time to time, and help me pack shoes for shipping. Over the past 5 years I’ve maintained an inventory of about 200 to 300 shoes that are online for sale using an EBay store front. Today, about 60% to 70% of my inventory remains women’s shoes, and the rest, men shoes and a few hats.
I’ve been a top rated power seller for the last 4 years. In the 6 years I’ve been selling on EBay, I’ve conducted more than 3,400 separate customer transactions and had more than 1,750 of those customers give their customer feedback. I’ve had 1,749 positive feedback's and only 1 negative, for a positive feedback rating of 99.3%. Because I have more than 3,400 sales transactions, with only 1 of them being unfavorable, and a 99.93% positive customer feedback percentage, I must be doing something right!
I started my EBay business to help pay for my daughter’s college education, and it served its purpose, and then some. I went from selling on both EBay and Amazon, to narrowing my focus to only EBay. I went from selling any and everything I can get my hands on around my own house, to honing in on a niche in men’s and women’s shoes. In the last year I finally switched from an $80 camera to a $100 camera. I’ve also switched laptops only one time in 6 years. One of my strengths has been my ability to develop and build efficient and effective systems. I trimmed down and streamlined dozens of processes in the last 6 years, so that I operate extremely lean, without sacrificing the quality of my product.
This short blog post is simply to tell you that if I can do it, then YOU CAN DO IT!!!
Never make it about what you can’t do. Instead, always make it about what you CAN do. It’s about the possibilities, the opportunities, the power of belief, the ability to change and adapt, and the willingness to work harder and work smarter.
Now, it's your turn!
